There was quite a light show as the sun set.

We beelined straight up the steep & grassy south face of Brown Mountain, gaining 1,700 feet in about half a mile and cranking to the summit in just 50 minutes. The lovely Red Mountains made for some nice eye candy along the way.

Our starting point for this short climb was at an elevation of 11,600 feet on the 4x4 road on the south side of Brown Mountain. This road is narrow with steep drops in places but its generally smooth and easy-going. We drove up the evening before, pulled the 4runner over in an awkward place for sleeping, and were treated to great sunset. This picture is looking south toward Storm Peak.

Looking east toward unranked Hurricane Peak from the top of Brown Mountain. I thought about going over there, but sometimes it feels good to quit while you're ahead. West Needle, Grizzly & "V 10" in the previous days had cost more than their fair share of effort. Besides, we're suckers for coffee & treats at Mouse's in Ouray and getting home early from a Silverton trip is an even rarer treat!
