Cougar Mountain as seen from near the Right Fork Trailhead. So close yet so far away! We have to hike around to the other side on rough terrain to breach the cliffs and gain access to the summit area.

After breaching the major cliff band that guards massive Cougar Mountain we're presented with this discouraging view. The terrain is convoluted and the summit still seems so far away! Did I mention its hot and we're practically wilting?

We take advantage of the water for the remainder of the hike out the Right Fork. The rocks are slimy and slick but the water feels great!

After a brutal 11 hour day we watched the annular eclipse which was the impetus for this trip to Zion. I didn't have a setup to photograph the sun but I did get a small image of the eclipse in a reflection from a welding helmet filter I was fiddling with. At the peak of the eclipse the moon was perfectly centered in the sun.

During the eclipse our shadows looked funky and out of focus!

May 20,
The most striking part of the eclipse was the drastic temperature drop as the moon blocked the sun's rays. Kevin & I put on down jackets which was surreal after baking in the intense heat all day!
