Yesterday I backpacked the 11.5 miles from Mocassin Lake to my camp on the eastern tip of Grave Lake in unsettled weather. I hid out under rocks when storms rolled through. The last few hours were spent plodding through ankle deep hail soup. I was a shivering, soggy mess by the end but I didn't care because I WAS AT GRAVE LAKE!! And I'd successfully found my way in via the Rez in a single day, something that I had long been contemplating.
It was tough coercing myself out of bed this morning and back into the wetness. But such is life when you've wrecklessly orphaned a peak like UN 12,020. I was little more than half a mile away on Chess Ridge a few years earlier, completely oblivious to this little guy's existance.
I had no beta, so simply followed my nose up the northeast slopes hoping for the best. No major obstacles reared their heads. The views of Grave Lake, Mount Hooker and the Baptiste Lake area were incredible and well worth the effort.
Once back at Grave Lake I packed up and headed for Raft Creek, establishing my second camp of the trip at a lake below Tepee Pass. Tomorrow's plan is to climb a trio of 12ers from the pass before dropping down the other side to Roberts Lake.
