The approach to Harrower's southwest ridge involves a lot of obnoxious boulder hopping if you don't pick the optimal line. Fremont & Jackson Peaks are in the background.

"Faler Tower" dominates the scene as we start up a wide gully heading for Harrower's southwest ridge.

We came across these items sitting in the middle of a use trail in the approach gully. Wierd.

Ferocious Faler Tower as seen from its saddle with Harrower Peak. Kelsey lists three 5th class routes to the top of this highly exposed pinnacle. One goes up the steep ridge from this saddle.

Even though this summit is officially named Harrower Peak almost every climber refers to it as Ellingwood Peak. Ellingwood made the first ascent. Harrower was a ranger and mayor of Pinedale who died in 1967. When the name Harrower was submitted for approval Sublette County Historical Society was not aware the peak was already named Ellingwood. Personally I like Harrower better. We already have enough stuff named after Ellingwood.

Teresa figuring out what was probably the hardest technical obstacle of the day, a reachy low 5th class boulder problem. We had a rappel cord along but I was able to help Teresa downclimb without it... by the end she was more or less sitting securely in my lap, but hey, whatever works right?

Even though some of the terrain is easy going there is often a real feeling of exposure.

There was some minor up and down along the line we pieced together. Routefinding was interesting and took a little time. Many harder and/or more exposed options exist as well.

Me & the massive summit register. You won't find many registers in the Winds, but when you do they can be a little over the top. Other large metal registers exist atop Gannett and Fremont Peaks. Photo by Teresa.

Elephant Head (12, 172 ft) is east of Harrower Peak and connected by an 11,700 ft saddle. According to the guidebook the ridge on the right goes at 5.6 and the one on the left is 4th class. It would have been fun to find out but weather was developing quickly.

Fremont & Jackson Peaks and Indian Basin as seen on the standard descent from Harrower Peak. Titcomb Basin (on the left) is becoming fairly dark. Our camp is right below Fremont and we have several hundred feet of elevation to regain along the way.

Looking back at the northwest side of Harrower Peak during a thunderstorm as we hike back toward camp. The ridge we used to approach the summit is on the right (we gained it fairly high from the backside). A super classic 5.6 route climbs the North Arete from here directly to the summit in something like 15-20 pitches.
