Time to get down to business. It is very popular to bypass the real meat of this canyon as it requires advanced equipment & techniques.
CP volunteers to tackle the first serious keeper pothole, setting the etriers such that the rest of us can easily climb out.
Quandary Canyon (Direct) San Rafael Swell October 15,
Dominic gently rappels from a deadman anchor we built.

We're now deep in the technical portion of the canyon. Pot shot..... away!
Quandary Canyon (Direct) San Rafael Swell October 15, 2011
Dominic's turn to tackle a potential keeper. You can see that there are three lines here. One is for rappelling. The other two near his shoulder are attached to two potshots that we threw over the far lip of the pothole.
Quandary Canyon (Direct) San Rafael Swell October 15, 2011
Tight quarters between potholes here. CP climbs out while I'm perched on a little saddle waiting to rappel into the next one.

Quandary Canyon (Direct) San Rafael Swell October 15, 2011
Dominic scrambles up the crux of Ramp Canyon. This is a rather precarious, low 5th class upclimb with unfriendly consequences... and our shoes are wet.
Quandary Canyon (Direct) San Rafael Swell October 15, 2011
Being the badass that he is, AA opted to follow Dominic unroped while CP & I played it safe and aided up a much tougher line below the anchor Dominic established. CP gave me some footholds down low and then used the ascenders to give himself some. We did it this way because a fall from the easier line would have resulted in one hell of a pendulum.

Ramp Canyon is a pleasant little surprise. Nifty.
