Smallcatraz

May 3, 2014

Smallcatraz is a short slot that is part of the same system as the famous Alcatraz in Robbers Roost. Formerly known as simply the North East Fork of Twin Corral Box Canyon, I am happy someone finally gave it a fitting name. Smallcatraz has no mandatory rappels but plenty of fun squeezing and downclimbing. The slot is quite tight actually, but not all that deep for the most part. The canyon ends with a huge cave and dramatic pour-off and overlook. The exit is typically made by upclimbing the final section (fun and interesting offwidth practice) and then sneaking out via an area of low angle slickrock back to the rim. Unfortunately my camera battery died halfway through and I couldn't get any pictures of the spectacular and unique ending, which is by far the best part. Even with our large group of eight we had plenty of time to add Smallcatraz on to our day after Alcatraz.
