Mount Sopris is the prize of the Roaring Fork Valley. Locals seems obsessed with this lowly 12,953' pair of twin summits, naming all sorts of businesses, schools, rotary clubs, and such after it. I remember reading somewhere that at one point Sopris was believed to be the highest peak in Colorado! Shocking, since it falls short of that title by nearly 1,500 feet! What Sopris lacks in height it more than makes up for in overall size, dominating the scene for miles and fooling many an eye.

Dom and I were sort of excited to finally be climbing this curious peak which is held in such high esteem. Despite being a rather simple and somewhat lengthy snowshoe plod, climbing Mount Sopris turned out to be deeply enjoyable in an inexplicable kind of way. Yep, there's certainly something special about this little giant mountain.

Climbing toward the gentle ridge above Thomas Lakes.

Conditions are too unstable to touch those slopes today. We saw significant natural slide activity early in the morning.

Blowing snow is good for pretty pictures, but nothing else!
