Constrychnine

A straightforward canyon with multiple big rappels

Henry Mountains

Dwight, Dominic and Kevin on the approach. The nearby Henry Mountains rise approximately 6,000 feet above us. The contrast between the snowcapped peaks and the dry, colorful desert is beautiful.

Head of Constrychnine

Dominic at the head of the canyon known as Constrychnine in the Poison Springs area. In we go!

A giant anchor

Dwight poses in front of the giant anchor currently in place at the first rappel in Constrychnine.

Canyoneering virgin

Kevin, a canyoneering virgin, rappels into his first technical slot canyon!

120 feet of fun

Dwight on the initial rappel, a 120 footer down a smooth sandstone wall.

Second rappel

Dwight sets off on the second rappel, apparently one of the largest in the Poison Springs area. (at 190 feet).  We rapped single strand on a 60 meter rope and used a 50+ meter rope for a pull cord.

Kevin on rappel

Kevin enjoys the long rappel. Notice how deep and dark the canyon is here.

Kids at the playground

We feel like kids at a playground as we deal with the easy but fun obstacles the canyon throws at us.

Tomfoolery

Dwight and Kevin ponder some of Dominic's enthusiastic tomfoolery.

Water avoidance

Kevin bridges over a small puddle. This is a good place to learn or practice basic cayoneering techniques.

Ride the horsey

Dominic prepares for the final rappel which is anchored from a piton. Getting into the rappel is easily accomplished by first "riding the horsey". Kevin's next in line.

Final rappel

Kevin on the final 90 foot rappel.

Its dark down here

Dwight rappels out of the light and into the cool depths of the canyon.

Nicely lit narrows

Kevin makes his way through some nicely lit narrows.

Final obstacle

Dwight backs down the final obstacle using the rope for a handline.

Dominic's new technique

Dominic tries out a new technique for making use of handlines.

Canyon walls

Kevin tackles the final obstacle as the huge canyon walls loom overhead.

Squeeze

Dominic squeezes down into a narrrow drop.

The ascent

Dominic, Kevin and Dwight on the ascent back to the "trailhead".
